Configure Mollie for ConfTool Pro
Mollie is a European payment service provider and available in many European countries. It is fully compliant with the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the UK GDPR. Their customer support team has a solid reputation, as evidenced by their Trustpilot reviews.
With Mollie, you can accept online payments using popular credit and debit cards such as Visa, Mastercard, and American Express. These cards are widely recognized as the most common online payment method across the globe.
In order to receive payments via Mollie, you need to create a Mollie merchant account. The account is free and there are no monthly or set-up fees. Mollie only charges payment fees per successful transaction as listed on their website (usually 1.8% to 3.25% of the payment amount plus a fixed amount of approximately €0.25).
ConfTool does not charge any additional fees for the use of Mollie with ConfTool Pro, as the corresponding modules are already included in our system and organizers can link ConfTool Pro to Mollie easily themselves.
The following steps explain how to set up a Mollie merchant account and link it to your ConfTool Pro installation.
1. Creating a New Mollie Account
Setting up a Mollie merchant account is straightforward. Please go to https://my.mollie.com/dashboard and sign up for a new Mollie account (see image 1). You will receive an automatic e-mail with a verification code (see image 2). Please enter the code on the Mollie sign up page to authenticate your e-mail address (see image 3). In the last step, enter some basic information about your organization (see image 4).
This account could already be used to test the system. However, to ensure your account is fully activated, please complete the onboarding process described in the next chapter. This step is essential for Mollie to validate your account.
2. Onboarding Process for Your Mollie Account
Log in to your new Mollie account and start the onboarding process to get access to all Mollie products once completed (see image 5). Mollie usually needs a few days to verify the data submitted during this process.
- Enter information about your stakeholders / owners of your organization (see image 6).
- Provide additional information about your business activity (see image 7).
- Choose “cards” as online payment method (see image 8) and activate it (see image 9).
- Confirm the statement of intent and enter your business start date (see image 10).
- Upload an ID document for each of your legal representatives to validate their identity (see image 11). You can provide a passport, a national identity card or a residence permit. A driving license issued by the Netherlands or the UK is also accepted.
- Link your bank account with your Mollie account to receive payouts (see image 12). You will need to make a verification payment of usually €0.01 to confirm your bank details (see image 13). Please note that only IBAN or British bank accounts are accepted.
After Mollie has verified your data, you are ready to connect Mollie to ConfTool Pro.
3. Mollie API Key for the Use with ConfTool Pro
Mollie has a “test mode” and a “live mode”. You can find the switch between both modes in the “Payments” menu (see image 14).
Only in “live mode” payments will be processed. In “test mode”, payments will not be processed!
To link your Mollie account to your ConfTool Pro installation, you need an API key that grants ConfTool the required access rights to the interface of your Mollie account.
Please select the link “Browse” in the main menu bar at the top of the page and then the “Developers” menu below (see image 15). On the next page, you can find two different API-keys (see image 16): “live key” and “test key”. You will only need the “live key” to link your Mollie account to ConfTool Pro.
4. Enable Mollie in Your ConfTool Pro Installation
To be able to use ConfTool Pro together with Mollie, you have to configure a few settings in ConfTool (see image 17).
Log in to your ConfTool Pro installation as an administrative user and go to the page:
Overview => Settings => Manage Payment Options
Scroll down to the section “Payment via Mollie” and:
- Set the option “Enable Credit Card via Mollie” to “Yes, enabled for all participants”.
- Enter a short “Event ID” with a maximum length of 16 characters, for example “YourEvent2026”. This will be used to identify the payments in Mollie and to create unique "order IDs".
- Enter a short “Payment Description”, for example “Your Event 2026: %1, %2” (the parameters %1 and %2 will be replaced by the User ID and the full name of the participant). The payment description will be shown on the payment page in ConfTool and on the list of payments in Mollie.
- Enter the “API Key” from your Mollie account (see image 16). It is safe to directly use the live key and make a test payment in live mode only.
- Choose a “Currency” for Mollie payments. Please note that this code must match the main currency of your ConfTool installation.
Please remember:
Payments are only processed if you use the live key.
If you use the test key, no payments will be processed.
5. Make a Test Payment
Finally, test your configuration with a small booking (e.g. €1.00) via ConfTool Pro using Mollie as payment option.
Please first register a test user as a participant in ConfTool Pro and log in to this user’s account.
You should then see the Mollie payment button on the user’s overview page. After clicking the button, a payment window will appear where you can enter your personal card details.
A successful payment should appear in your Mollie merchant account within seconds. It takes about seven days until the amount (minus payment fees) is credited to your bank account.
If you encounter any problems, please contact us at service@conftool.net.
Notes:
- Please note that ConfTool has no business connection to Mollie.
- We always recommend offering bank transfer as a payment method as well. This is usually the cheapest payment method for local participants.
- If you want to try the system in test mode, please do not use real credit card details, but the following test cards:
- 4111 1111 1111 1111 (Payment will be successful)
- 4000 0000 0000 0002 (Card will be declined)
- 4000 0000 0000 0341 (Payment exception, card will also be declined)
