Disabled Languaging in the Digital World: Applying Crip Linguistics to the Study of Online Language Practices Among Individuals with Disabilities Uniwersytet im. Adama Mickiewicza, Poland The aim of this presentation is to demonstrate how the concept of crip linguistics introduced in the article by Jon Henner and Octavian Robinson (2023) can be applied in online language research. Crip linguistics as a paradigm explores the connection between disability and language while simultaneously prompting for re-evaluation of linguistic methodologies, conceptual approaches to language and ways in which it is described. Digital space operates on different sets of communicational rules and as a result, researchers are able to observe linguistic norms, communication needs and styles with greater clarity. Four examples will be presented to illustrate key concepts of Henner and Robinson framework. Those include: biosemiotics in analysis of emoji usage among d/Deaf and hear-of-hearing individuals; preserving crip speech through technology shown by the example of stuttering and tics in captions; crip time and change of norms online exemplified by autistic infodumping in social media; and compulsory abledbodiedness examined through experiences of autistic people with tone indicators. As it will be shown by those examples, online language research in the digital humanities field can also, as proposed by Henner and Robinson, incorporate the category of disability into its analytical work. | |
