Introduction: D-Modules: Bridging Theory and Applications 1: Technische Universität Chemnitz; 2: Max-Planck-Institut für Mathematik in den Naturwissenschaften The concept of a D-module enables us to investigate linear PDEs with the language of algebraic geometry. The theory of D-modules has become an indispensable ingredient in various areas of mathematics. For instance, their use has significantly enhanced the study of singularities in algebraic geometry, and important results in representation theory rely on methods from the algebraic theory of differential equations. At the same time, holonomic D-modules and their analytic solution functions are omnipresent in the sciences, ranging from applications in theoretical physics to combinatorics and algebraic statistics. From a computational point of view, an efficient manipulation of D-modules in computer algebra systems comes with a variety of obstacles. These, in turn, result in intriguing challenges on their own. Summa summarum: Algebraic analysis has an interplay with numerous different areas, some of which have experienced little interaction so far. The aim of this minisymposium is to create new links between experts from theory and computation. It shall provide a fertile environment to build and strengthen ties between different areas in which D-modules enter the stage. | |
