Digital Privacy as a Relational Practice: A Media-Educational Typology of Adolescents’ Privacy Orientations in Algorithmic Publics TU Dresden, Deutschland The extended abstract conceptualizes digital privacy as a relational, situational, and reflexive practice that adolescents actively shape in their everyday use of social media. Rather than viewing privacy as a purely technical issue, it is understood as a form of managing visibility, social relationships, and contextual information flows. Based on the Reflexive Privacy Analysis (RPA), a qualitative and multi-method research design combining interviews, group discussions, and interaction diaries, the study develops a four-part typology of adolescents’ privacy orientations. These include situationally protection-oriented adolescents, relationally negotiating actors, reflexively curating self-presenters, and critically strategic prosumers. The findings reveal that adolescents possess differentiated but unevenly distributed privacy competencies. The typology highlights the dynamic and context-dependent nature of privacy practices and provides a framework for targeted media education. It emphasizes the need to foster digital literacy as a combination of technical, social, and critical competencies in algorithmically structured environments. | |
