Mapping Web Universe of the ZKM: Historical Reconstruction Based on the Internet Archive Technische Universität Darmstadt, Germany This study explores the web presence of the Zentrum für Kunst und Medien (ZKM) as a case study in the historical reconstruction of virtual museums. Recognising institutional websites as part of born-digital heritage, it proposes a methodology to map the broader ‘web universe’ of cultural institutions based on data preserved in the Internet Archive. The approach combines automated, semi-automated, and manual methods, including URL and metadata extraction, digest-based filtering, and visual interface analysis. The resulting reconstruction identifies 74 subdomain websites created by ZKM between 1996 and 2025 and traces their emergence, lifespan, and disappearance. The findings expose a layered digital presence with a persistent foundational core and a dynamic periphery. The study also highlights significant gaps in web archiving, calling attention to the limitations of relying solely on archived data. The proposed methodology is scalable, adaptable, and intended as a model for future research in digital heritage and web history. | |
