The Dialogue between Reason and Intuition in Contemporary Philosophy 1: Utrecht University, Netherlands; 2: Carnegie Mellon University, USA Philosophical reasoning involves an interplay between more-or-less general "positions" that one argues for, and the intuitions that come from specific examples. We use large-language models to study how this process unfolds across seventy years, and over 20,000 papers of English-language philosophy. We show how positions and examples co-evolve over time, with positions rising and falling more quickly against a backdrop of longer-lasting examples, how the field values a diversity of arguments more than a diversity of positions, but how individual philosophers are rewarded more for novel positions than novel examples, and how a novelty penalty occurs for philosophers who attempt to combine positions and examples in new ways. While we understand a great deal about how innovation works in the empirical sciences and popular culture, our work provides new insights into a form of reasoning that is central to the humanities, and takes a very different form. | |
