The Soviet Family on the Stage of Change: Digital Approaches to Ideology and Childhood in Postwar Children's Drama LMU München, Germany This project explores the ideological construction of the family in postwar Soviet culture through the lens of children’s theatre. Drawing on a corpus of 54 Soviet plays published between 1945 and 1964, the study compares representations of family models during late Stalinism and the Thaw. Children’s theatre served as a powerful tool of propaganda, shaping ideals for the youngest Soviet citizens. By combining qualitative close reading with digital methods—including TF-IDF, Z-score analysis, and topic modeling (LDA and STM)—the project traces shifts in the language, themes, and ideological emphases across time. Results reveal changing portrayals of the ideal child, parents, and the balance between private and collective identities. The project argues that these theatrical texts functioned not only as entertainment but also as instruments of state ideology. It contributes to both Soviet cultural history and digital humanities by demonstrating how computational tools can illuminate ideological transformations in literary discourse. | |
