One Genre, Many Formalisms: On Formulaic Language in Pre-Modern Chinese Mathematical Texts FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg, Deutschland Certain technical genres such as mathematical texts are commonly assumed to exhibit patterns of formulaic language use. However, it is difficult to precisely assess to what extent this is actually true, and if so, how such patterns do manifest themselves. In this project, we make use of a computational suite of tools developed by Richard Forsyth, formulib, that is designed to quantify and analyze formulaic language, applying it to pre-modern Chinese mathematical texts, a genre where detecting the prevalence of formulaic patterns is particularly relevant. Our findings reveal that mathematical texts are indeed more formulaic than other genres, but that particular formulaic sequences are mostly limited to single works, i.e. that individual authors used formulaic language to different extents and in different ways. | |
