Thermoresponsive hybrid magnetic nanospheres directly prepared from preformed uncrosslinked PNIPAM Instituto de Nanociencia y Materiales de Aragón (INMA), CSIC - Universidad de Zaragoza, Zaragoza, España Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) is the basis of many sensing and biomedical applications due to its thermoresponsiveness, biocompatibility and tunable lower critical solution temperature (LCST) close to body temperature. PNIPAM, as well as in free chains in solution, has functional properties when grafted on surfaces, as hydrogel, and also forming copolymers, core-shell structures or hybrid materials. These conformations are often obtained simultaneously with monomer (NIPAM) polymerization. In biomedical applications, one concern about these procedures is the cytotoxicity of unreacted NIPAM. In this work, we developed a facile preparation method that employs already polymerized PNIPAM, thus avoiding the use of NIPAM, to obtain thermoresponsive hybrid magnetic nanospheres, adapting a versatile miniemulsion-evaporation procedure without the use of a crosslinker. | |
