Widely extending fMRI applications to study the neural pathways in olfactory function has been partially hindered by the technical complexity of designing a device to apply controlled odors specifically to patients subjected to fMRI. Most commercial devices are either complex, expensive, with slow response time or require an external pressurized air source. To facilitate biomedical research on and clinical assessment of the neural pathways modulated by the olfactory system, we have developed and tested a simple, low-cost, open source, stand-alone device allowing to apply easily selectable controlled sequences of olfactory stimuli in subjects undergoing fMRI. | |
