Optimizing the 3D surgical planning workflow for hepatobiliary patients: a web-based platform to manage 3D surgical planning and enhance collaboration in the hospital 1: Universitat Pompeu Fabra, España; 2: Hospital Germans Trias i Pujol, España The implementation of 3D surgical planning in hospital environments faces significant workflow challenges that limit its clinical adoption and effectiveness. This study addresses the critical need for workflow optimization in 3D surgical planning for hepatobiliary surgeries at Hospital Germans Trias i Pujol through systematic analysis and digital solution development. Using Lean Management principles and the Plan-Do-Check-Act cycle, a four-phase methodology was employed: analysis, design, implementation, and validation. Current inefficiencies were identified through direct observation, stakeholder interviews, and quantitative error tracking over one month. A comprehensive digital platform prototype was developed using React.js, Node.js, and MariaDB to address identified bottlenecks. Quantitative analysis revealed systematic problems affecting 100% of cases, with critical information gaps requiring an average of 23.75 minutes of additional search time per case. Biomedical engineers spent 27% of their time on administrative tasks. User acceptance evaluation of the developed web-based platform yielded exceptional results, with System Usability Scale scores averaging 92.0. This research demonstrates that successful 3D surgical planning integration requires not only advanced technologies but equally robust workflow management and collaborative digital tools. | |
