Public Diplomacy Under Donald Trump: Implications for the Field Western Michigan University This talk will discuss US public diplomacy during Donald Trump’s second presidential term, focusing on the analysis of its alignment with US’s America First foreign policy priorities at the policy and ideological levels. The talk will draw on examples from the key sectors of US public diplomacy, such as broadcasting, educational and cultural exchanges, global strategic messaging, and sports and arts diplomacy, to demonstrate the dramatic shift in priorities from the Biden Administration, and to critically assess the impact of this shift on US’s global reputation and its relationships with other states and communities around the world. The talk will also discuss the critical role of various non-state actors – businesses, tech corporations, nonprofits, cultural and educational institutions, citizen diplomats and others – in US public diplomacy, how they have been either supporting or opposing the Trump Administration’s approach to US’s public diplomacy, and the benefits, risks, and consequences of their actions. | |
