Fostering a collaborative educational environment with public bodies in Central Italy and Northern Portugal, developing people's health and wellness with forest bathing activities. 1: Centre for Applied Ecology “Prof. Baeta Neves”, InBIO - Research Network in Biodiversity and Evolutionary Biology, School of Agriculture, University of Lisbon, Tapada da Ajuda, 1349-017, Lisboa, Portugal; 2: School of Agriculture, Polytechnic University of Coimbra, 3045-601, Coimbra, Portugal In the 2020, the first national park in Italy, Sibillini Mountains National Park (SMNP) was equipped with a forest bathing path in each municipality of the park. Updating sessions for training the hiking guides of the National Park, were organized in collaboration with their association. In 2023 and 2024, funded by the Marche Region, the Camerino Union of Mountain Municipalities organised vocational training for more than 40 new forest bathing guides. The principal objective of these interventions was to:
In 2024 the management of Parque da Devesa, in Vila Nova de Famalição showed its interest about forest bathing activities, and a forest bathing session was experienced. Parque da Devesa - a green urban area, extended for 27 ha and crossed by the Pelhe River - offers to the citizens a wide range of activities linked to the use of this large green space, practically adjacent to the centre of the town, with a population of over 130,000 inhabitants. In 2025, after evaluating the site, the opportunities and constraints related with forest bathing activities, two cycles of immersions in the forest atmosphere were organized in collaboration with the Parque da Devesa and the Municipality of Vila Nova de Famalicão. The first cycle was in March 2025, and the second in the following May, each cycle at different times and on different days of the week. Mood states, self-assessed by participants, before and after of the immersions in the forest atmosphere were recorded, as at the end of the activities an evaluation of the activities was assessed by participants, with scores and answers to open questions. Vila Nova de Famalicão Municipality also organised a theoretical and practical training, for municipal and external staff, to increase the number of tutors of immersions in the forest atmosphere. Many training participants had high qualifications (15 degrees · 3 postgraduate degrees · 5 master's degrees · 2 doctorates · 3 other training programs) in various disciplines (psychology, letters, education, medicine, environment, biology, engineering, architecture). The experiential and educational environment created has proven to be so cooperative, that a collaboration with the Psychology Department of the University of Minho has already been started, with the aim of investigating the impact of the future activities that will be developed by the trained tutors, who are already practicing. In this paper we examine and evaluate the results of the self-assessment of participants' mood changes during the immersion in the forest environment performed in 2025, and the assessment of the vocational training. | |
