Peer Feedback Training Done Right

J. Roloff Rothman

Kanda University of International Studies, Japan

Providing training in how to give peer feedback can ensure its effectiveness and sometimes be as beneficial as instructor feedback (Patri, 2002; Nakanishi & Akahori, 2005; Hirose, 2008). This presentation shares the results of research comparing the written work of two university academic writing classes asked to provide written feedback for their peers with two classes explicitly trained to use feedback guidelines when making comments. The presentation ends by suggesting what writing metalanguage and constructive phrasing should be explicitly taught when implementing peer feedback.
