Diversity and Inclusion are the themes of this year’s annual JALT conference, themes which underlie the use of English as a Lingua Franca (ELF). While JACET has an ELF SIG, JALT has yet to take such measures. ELF spreads out ownership of the language. It places more of an emphasis on “outer-circle” non-native-speaker variants and less of an emphasis on “inner-circle” native-speaker variants. This move to democratize English should be applauded and needs to be supported by better teaching materials. However, it begs a question. How ELF should teaching materials be? Are there limits?
