This presentation will describe an inquiry into how Japanese university students who have returned from a study abroad experience negotiate their identity on social networking sites (SNS) when interacting informally with non-Japanese interlocutors. SNS provides a unique opportunity for EFL students to practice language skills in an informal environment and to maintain and develop social connections with non-Japanese partners, but maintaining one’s unique identity in these intercultural exchanges can prove difficult. The presenters will outline the methods they used to explore this topic and describe how the findings of this research can be applied to individual practice.
