Lessons from a Dauntingly Dense Academic Paper

Nick C. Ellis’s 2005 paper ‘At the interface: Dynamic interactions of explicit and implicit language knowledge’ deserves a wide readership among language teachers: its density conceals nuggets. It articulates how explicit language knowledge has the potential to become implicit knowledge when it is called upon as learners communicate. One implication is that if learners are to develop implicit knowledge they need to call upon robust and accurate explicit knowledge. This presentation explores this implication by looking at examples of explicit knowledge and how this knowledge can be developed.
