Impact of AI in L2 Classrooms: Student Perceptions
A. Gallacher, A. Thompson, M. Howarth
Kyushu Sangyo University, Japan
This presentation highlights qualitative results obtained during a larger research project aimed at investigating the impact of using AI in the L2 classroom. Japanese ESL university students (N=253) interacted with an online chat-bot via smartphone, and recorded their thoughts on subsequent surveys about these interactions in comparison to doing the same tasks with their peers. Results suggest that students see the chat-bot as a novelty rather than a legitimate language-learning tool, and that it lacks the richness of interaction they could achieve with their peers. Reasons for these opinions are discussed in relation to ongoing trends within CALL-based research.
