The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong S.A.R. (China)
This research study used genre analysis to analyse popular scientific articles from a local Hong Kong newspaper and students’ assignments. A module on writing popular science articles was created and written for the English for Science Students course to teach students how to communicate science clearly to non-scientific people. The format of a popular scientific article and the techniques used to explain technical jargon were analysed by comparing articles from South Morning China Post (SCMP) to Susan Pelger’s Kommunikation for Naturvetare. The effectiveness of the module was analysed by using students’ work before and after the introduction of the module.
