The impact of power on supply chain digitalization: A research framework from a systematic literature review

While the influences of globalization and digitalization on the supply chains are increasing, the power allocation within several markets is centralized to a small number of companies. Although there are initial research approaches about the influence of power on the supply chain, there is a lack of a consistent definition of the concept of power in SCM, and current research is also not including digitalization trends and associated shifts in value creation.

The objective of this research is to develop a research framework and investigate the research gap about the impact of power asymmetries on the supply chain, in addition to the trend of digitalization. A systematic literature review on the term of power is used to synthesize the current State of the Art of this research field and to provide a comprehensive definition of the concept of power. This review establishes a theoretical framework while combining the concept of digitalization in supply chain management and the research about different power allocations in the supply chain. Regarding the research objective, it analysed a final number of roughly 67 papers which are published in the years 1990-2021.

While this research provides an overview of the impact of power allocations on digitalization and innovation strategies in the present research of supply chain management, it also develops a definition of power in supply chain management in general. Linked to the definition of power, this research elaborates on the research gap between power allocations and the digitalization of the supply chain.



Data Quality in Social Media Analytics for Operations and Supply Chain Performance Management

Social media analytics (SMA) is claimed to be an opportunity for practical inquiry to create new knowledge and possibilities but is only slowly finding its way into practice due to uncertain information quality. Good Operations and Supply Chain Management (OSCM) decisions are just as good as the data they are based upon. A more detailed consideration of data quality is needed, especially when natural language data is processed for decision-making. Motivated by recent calls in the domain, the purpose of this study is to investigate how big data quality is considered in SMA for operations and supply chain performance. The study employs a directed qualitative content analysis of 56 research contributions based on the re-analysis of a previous systematic literature review. The results reveal that within performance-oriented SMA literature, intrinsic and contextual data quality are not comprehensively addressed by OSCM research to date. More particularly it is shown, that contextual data quality assessment remains a challenge for the analysis of textual social media data. The study contributes by reporting how data quality is considered for SMA in operations and supply chain performance management (OSCPM) literature from an intrinsic and contextual perspective. Based on the results of this analysis data, relevancy and data believability are identified as levers to reduce information uncertainty in SMA-aided decision-making, paving the way for future research on contextual social media data quality in OSCM.



Visualisation tool for an integrated radiopharmaceutical supply chain (SC) diagnostic

How can a laboratory technician grasp the entire SC when dispatching a product for testing to a laboratory in another country? Radiopharmaceuticals are pharmaceutical products added with radioactive components, used in nuclear medicine for early detection and treatment of various diseases. Operations and processes of radiopharmaceutical SCs are complex due to stringent regulations and to the physical decaying over time, characteristic of the product, called half-life, which generally implies a make-to-order and Just-In-Time logistics. To answer this question, a visualization tool is needed to clearly describe the specificities and constraints of each process of the end-to-end radiopharmaceuticals SC. The framework is built through a literature review and 34 in-depth interviews with direct and indirect stakeholders along the chain (producers to end-users), over the most used radiopharmaceuticals, with various SC networks. The tool provides a tree visualization that classifies attributes according to their complexity (time, regulation, cost,…), thus providing a comprehensive view of the chain and emphasizing the point of attention of the entire chain. A guideline for non-experts and a diagnosis tool for logistics and SC experts, it could be a communication tool by setting standard between these professionals. The Mo99 SC, the most used radiopharmaceutical (33 million applications/year) was analyzed using this tool and showed a complexity of 27. With a rather simple structure, a relatively long 66h half-life and up to two weekly deliveries to the radiopharmacies, its SC complexifies due to the scarcity of production facilities in the world, implying the setting of a global SC.
