Eröffnungskeynote (engl.): Digitale Medien, Öffentlichkeit und Demokratie Ort: MS1.101 Aula / Konferenzraum, Do. Externe Ressource für diese Sitzung Prof. Dr. Philipp Lorenz-Spreen Over the past two decades, digital platforms have reorganized public discourse: their design and algorithms now curate what billions of people see, attention has become a scarce and fiercely contested resource, and generative AI has made content easier to produce than ever before. This talk asks what computational social science actually knows about the complex relationship between these technological shifts and changes in political behavior and attitudes. We will discuss how the attention economy amplifies psychological tendencies and how visibility and engagement are skewed towards divisive rhetoric and in favor for populist actors. Drawing on a systematic review of hundreds of studies on digital media and political outcomes, I will show that digital media’s effects are heterogenous and context dependent: Some patterns, like rising political participation, look promising in emerging democracies, while others, like declining trust and growing polarization, are more troubling in established ones. I will then turn to what can be done: behavioral interventions such as boosting comptences against manipulation, self-nudging tools that help people regulate their own smartphone use, and platform design choices that could better support autonomous, informed decision-making. The talk closes by mapping the challenges and the opportunities of how social science can help co-shape the digital transformation toward outcomes that strengthen rather than erode democratic life. |
