Pushing the Boundaries of Correctional Practice with People with Sexual Convictions: Moving from Intuition, to Evidence-Based, to…Compassion?
Nicholas Blagden
In relatively recent history within correctional rehabilitation, an individual’s disclosures of their own abusive histories were seen as excuses, justifications, or cognitive distortions. There is now a recognition of traumas experienced by men with sexual convictions, and a growing understanding of how rehabilitative intervention can work with such experiences. This presentation unpacks the developments in correctional practice from intuitive-led adversarial approaches, to evidence-led and trauma-informed holistic therapeutic approaches. The presentation details new approaches to intervention including those balancing an RNR framework with desistance principles and a biopsychosocial (BPS) model of human behaviour to improve intervention. The core argument in this presentation is that correctional practice needs to adhere more closely to principles of compassion in order to promote meaningful self-change (Blagden et al, 2024). Drawing on compassion-focused therapy (Gilbert, 2010; Hocken & Taylor, 2021) can provide the means of working in a trauma-informed way with those with sexual convictions or at-risk of offending. A turn towards compassionate practice is important not just in helping men lead offence-free lives, but also for reducing harm, sexual victimisation and potentially preventing sexual abuse through primary prevention.
