Adapting Evidence-Based Investigative Interviewing to New and Emerging Contexts

Investigative interviewing is a critical component of effective and ethical criminal investigations, particularly in sensitive cases such as child sexual abuse and human trafficking. Evidence-based practices, including those outlined in the Méndez Principles and the European Association of Psychology and Law (EAPL) White Paper on child abuse investigations, provide structured, non-coercive frameworks for eliciting accurate and reliable information. These approaches emphasize rapport-building, open-ended questioning, and the avoidance of suggestibility or leading techniques. Recent developments in investigative contexts—specifically the rise in online-facilitated abuse and transnational trafficking—have introduced additional complexities, including the increased presence of interpreters and culturally diverse victims and witnesses. These factors can significantly impact the effectiveness of interviews, particularly when interviewers are untrained in managing linguistic and cultural variables. This talk reviews current evidence-based practices in investigative interviewing and discusses recent adaptations made to address challenges posed by digital abuse and cross-border investigations. It further examines the role of interpreters, the implications of cultural competence in interviews, and the risks associated with miscommunication and misinterpretation. Drawing from emerging research and practice guidelines, practical considerations for interview planning and implementation in these complex cases will be discussed. The aim is to contribute to ongoing discussions about improving the quality and fairness of interviews while ensuring that victims’ rights and the integrity of the investigative process are upheld. Implications for training, policy, and interdisciplinary collaboration are also discussed.
