Propelled by an aggressive and concerted push from large corporations like Google and AI companies such as OpenAI, the use of generative AI has become ubiquitous among educators and learners alike. Yet, the drive to integrate generative AI into education infrastructure appears to be driven more by a fabricated fear of missing out and coordinated marketing strategies than by empirical evidence. In this talk, I examine how generative AI tools are being integrated into educational systems with little testing or oversight, resulting in the flattening of learning, fostering dependency, undermining critical thinking and creativity, and reproducing existing inequalities, while also contributing to the commercialisation of a collective responsibility.
