Keynote: Tomasz Majkowski: Digital Games and Fascist Pedagogy Location: Auditorium, ul. Krupnicza 33a In the long tradition of denouncing digital games as globalist forces of the Empire (in Hardt and Negi's sense), they are frequently considered the first medium of the post-national, global world, and denounced for their role in the dissemination of US neoliberal ideology. The concepts of personal growth through mindless grind, celebration of personal agency and success, as well as ascribing a monetary value to all activities are criticized alongside militaristic, imperial overtones, turning mainstream digital games into a perfect tool for the military–entertainment complex of the global world. In such perspective, local, ethnic and nationally coded productions are frequently praised for their ability to bring attention to marginalized cultures and provide the alternative for the globalizing forces. In this talk, I will take a step into a different direction to scrutinize the way strong ethnic coding combined with overall Promethean narratives, preoccupation with genealogy, ancestry, legitimacy and social cohesion pushed mainstream single-player digital games into the direction of fascist pedagogy, unwittingly providing a handy tool to disseminate main topoi of the fascist worldview. In this way, they've played a key part in preparing the stage for the political crisis of contemporary world. |
