Keynote: Melissa Terras: Dreaming of Different DH Futures: Engaging with Speculative Design Approaches
Location: Auditorium, ul. Krupnicza 33a

The field of Digital Humanities has become established as a large, identifiable and successful academic community over the past twenty years. In that time both the world, and the digital environment, have changed significantly. Much early work in Digital Humanities remained independent from social and political aspects that characterise today’s information environment. Nowadays, we know better that networked, computational systems come with political and social biases, and are highly integrated into changing democracies and the fracturing of peace, and this cannot be easily divorced from the wider technological moment, however we chose to build and apply our tools.

What does this mean for the Digital Humanities? In this talk, Terras will look to speculative futures, and some of the core areas that DH needs to address now to move forward, to suggest how we retain agency, relevance, and creativity in our communities’ approaches to heritage, culture, history and associated digital infrastructure. How can we design better futures for our discipline and its community, and retain our core values, as an important opposition to data and platform capitalism?
