Opportunities and Challenges of 35 Years of Subnational Cooperation on Sustainability and Climate Action - the Case of ICLEI’s Network Achievements
Mr. Gino Van Begin
ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability, Alemania
What began in 1990 as the first global network of local and regional governments, advancing environmental initiatives globally, has grown today into a worldwide, strong, joint force of 2700 subnational jurisdictions committed to sustainable development in over 125 countries. ICLEI understands and advocates for sustainable development as a development that is zero-emission and nature based, resilient, circular and equitable.
ICLEI runs more than 350 projects per year, with a fundraising target of 100 million USD per 3 year, by more than 700 experts in 27 offices worldwide.
In this keynote intervention, Gino Van Begin, will share the opportunities, as well as the challenges that ICLEI and its subnational member jurisdictions face in the commitment to advance sustainability jointly. In particular, his intervention will highlight the work undertaken to tackle climate change and its impacts from a local to a global perspective.
